The Way Self-Defence

Who we are

The teachers at The Way are John and Emma. There are regular members who train every week in a variety of self-defence and martial arts disciplines. We run self-defence courses that provide an opportunity for non-members to gain some self-defence awareness and skills.

We believe there are two things that everyone should have some training in: First Aid and Self-Defence.

First aid is taught very well by several organisations which can easily be found in the phone book or on the Internet.

Surprisingly, self-defence training is not so easy to find. The police in most localities used to offer self-defence courses. These courses were excellent since the police are obviously aware of crime trends, and were able to cover matters such as personal security and household security. We feel that self-defence training from the police was the ideal approach, however, the police no longer have the resources to provide this service.

The training group is comprised of ordinary people from all walks of life. We have trained telecom engineers, college students, nurses, teachers and police officers. The range of professions represents the reality that society is becoming increasingly violent. Many jobs have an increased risk of physical abuse, especially those in the public sector such as nurses, teachers, police officers, bus drivers and so on.

Some employers do offer courses on dealing with verbal, mental, and in some cases physical abuse, however we feel that most people could do with some training in physical defence.

The fact that you are reading this website indicates that you have some interest in self-defence. Whether or not you do a self-defence course is your choice, even if it is not with us - you should not allow your friends, family or anyone to make this decision for you. Also, do not allow laziness to influence your decision. You should feel if it is the right thing for you to do, and if so, do it.
